The NEHRP Seismic Design Technical Brief No. 2: Seismic Design of Steel Special Moment Frames, A Guide for Practicing Engineers was produced under contract to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), by the NEHRP Consultants Joint Venture, a joint venture of ATC and the Consortium of Universities for Research in Earthquake Engineering (CUREE). (Published 2009, 33 pages)

ABSTRACT: This guide was written to assist in the understanding and application of ASCE/SEI 7-05, Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures, ANSI/AISC 341-05, Seismic Provisions fo Structural Steel Buildings, and ANSI/AISC 358-05, Prequalified Connections for Special and Intermediate Steel Moment Frames for Seismic Applications Including Supplement No. 1, documents in steel special moment frame design. It is intended especially for the practicing structural engineer, though it will also be useful for building officials, educators, and students. The main body of text in this guide emphasizes code requirements and accepted approaches to their implementation, but also includes background information and sketches to help understand the requirements.

On May 4, 2010, this document received the Award of Merit in the Study/Research/Guidelines category from the Structural Engineers Association of Northern California (SEAONC).

This technical brief is also available for download in electronic format at the NEHRP web site.

This task has been completed and produced the NIST GCR 09-917-3 report which may be ordered here in hard (printed) copy format.
