Rigid wall-flexible diaphragm (RWFD) buildings are ubiquitous throughout the United States and commonly take the form of the concrete tilt-up and masonry “big-box” buildings used by retail, storage, and distribution facilities. Seismic performance of RWFD buildings is most related to the large displacements of their flexible roof diaphragms, but traditional seismic design of RWFD buildings lacks a comprehensive consideration of this behavior. The new alternative RWFD procedure introduced in ASCE/SEI 7-22 corrects for this weakness and has been shown to offer better seismic performance for such buildings.
